Founding Story of Juggling It All Productions
In 1997, I was the director of Development and Production for a very small production company in Beverly Hills. I traveled to Florida and left my 18-month-old little girl with my husband for three weeks to fulfill my life long dream of making movies. When I returned from Florida, I soon became pregnant with our second child and quit my job with the production company. At three months pregnant, I had a miscarriage; this loss was devastating. I decided I needed to find a way to take my loss and create something others could share in. I needed to create films that help people: Films that encourage others to work hard and achieve their goals; Films that come from the heart and are about real people going through real situations; Films that the average person can relate to and identity with. This is what brought me to documentary filmmaking and Juggling It All: Motherhood.
I realized I was a mother first and a filmmaker second, and some how I needed to integrate my family and career. I am not alone. Mostly, Juggling It All is about real people going through real issues that affect a family's everyday life. With the help of my mommy-and-me friends, I came up with the concept you see in Juggling It All: Motherhood. My co-producer / co-writer continues to tell me that this movie should be about me- well, it is. However, this movie is about every new parent and every new mother who is trying to figure out what role they play now in life. After having a child I am now "The Mother" and always will be "The Mother." Career, friends and people will come and go but your children are always your children and you will always be their parent.
My goal is to show parents there is more than one answer of how to parent and we can all learn from each other. I sincerely hope parents realize the journey as a parent is not all easy but we have given a tremendous gift to the world, our children.
In a effort to get the word out, Juggling It All: Motherhood is shown in Marriage and Family classes in Universities as part of the "Challenges of Parenting" lectures. There are more videos and lecture series to come!
